Kisspeptin is a naturally occurring neuropeptide produced primarily in the hypothalamus. It serves as the upstream master switch for the entire reproductive hormone cascade — binding to the KiSS1 receptor (KISS1R) on GnRH neurons to trigger the release of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH), which then stimulates LH (luteinizing hormone) and FSH from the pituitary.
That cascade drives the production of sex hormones: testosterone in men, estrogen and progesterone in women. When kisspeptin signaling is impaired — by chronic stress, over-training, aging, or hypothalamic suppression — the entire hormonal axis can go quiet.
