SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a synthetic tetrapeptide engineered specifically to target and protect the inner mitochondrial membrane. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of every cell — when they decline, so does your energy, recovery, and resilience. SS-31 was designed to address that decline at its source.
Unlike most antioxidants that act broadly, SS-31 accumulates selectively within mitochondria — reaching concentrations up to 1,000× higher inside the mitochondria than in surrounding tissue. This targeted action allows it to stabilize cardiolipin, a critical phospholipid that maintains the structural integrity and efficiency of the inner mitochondrial membrane.
SS-31 binds selectively to cardiolipin — a phospholipid exclusive to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin is critical for the efficient function of the electron transport chain. As we age or experience metabolic stress, cardiolipin oxidizes and the mitochondrial membrane becomes dysfunctional. SS-31 stabilizes cardiolipin and restores electron transport efficiency, directly improving ATP (energy) output.
Mitochondrial dysfunction is closely tied to elevated reactive oxygen species — a form of oxidative stress that damages cellular structures. SS-31's mechanism reduces electron leak in the respiratory chain, cutting off the primary source of mitochondrial ROS production at the root rather than simply scavenging free radicals downstream.
SS-31 (Elamipretide) has been studied in clinical trials for heart failure, Barth syndrome, and primary mitochondrial myopathy. Research has also explored applications in age-related muscle decline (sarcopenia), renal ischemia, and neurodegenerative conditions. The peptide has an extensive body of published research across cardiovascular, metabolic, and longevity science. Our Education Center contains curated summaries of key literature.
SS-31 is typically administered via subcutaneous injection. The appropriate dosage, frequency, and protocol is determined through the BRAVO1 physician review process based on your individual health profile and wellness goals. Do not self-administer any peptide protocol without physician oversight.
